The Northern Circuit Route is the longest and one of the most scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Stretching across the mountain’s remote northern slopes, this trail delivers an unparalleled 360-degree journey around Africa’s highest peak. Because of its extended duration and gradual elevation gain, the Northern Circuit offers the best acclimatization of any route, resulting in the highest summit success rates on Kilimanjaro.
Beginning from the western Lemosho side, the trail winds through lush rainforest, crosses the vast Shira Plateau, and ventures into the quiet, untouched northern zones where trekkers encounter sweeping vistas and profound solitude. The dramatic landscapes—ranging from alpine desert to rugged volcanic ridges—provide some of the most diverse scenery on the mountain.
Physically demanding but exceptionally rewarding, the Northern Circuit is ideal for trekkers who want to maximize acclimatization while enjoying a quieter, more immersive experience. Its steady progression and spectacular summit approach make this one of Kilimanjaro’s finest trekking adventures.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where our team will warmly greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your mountain guide in the evening for a thorough climb briefing and gear check. Rest up, hydrate, and prepare for the exciting days ahead.
Your trek begins at Lemosho Gate with registration and a short transfer to the trailhead. Enter a lush montane rainforest alive with birdlife, colobus monkeys, and thick vegetation. The well-shaded trail ascends gradually, making for a comfortable first day of hiking. By late afternoon, arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, nestled beneath towering trees. Enjoy dinner and your first night on Kilimanjaro.
Climb out of the forest zone into heath and moorland, crossing small streams and open terrain. The views begin to widen, revealing glimpses of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes. The trail ascends steadily toward Shira Ridge before descending gently into Shira 1 Camp on the expansive plateau.
Cross the vast and dramatic Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful features. The trail moves through alpine meadows and volcanic rock formations with clear views of Mount Meru to the west. Toward the afternoon, arrive at Moir Hut, a quiet and remote campsite beneath the Lent Hills. Optional acclimatization hikes are available for those feeling energetic.
Begin with a steady climb to Lava Tower (4,600 m) for excellent acclimatization. After lunch, descend along the northern circuit path, entering the mountain’s remote northern flanks with sweeping open landscapes. The trail ends at Buffalo Camp, offering incredible views across Kenya and the northern plains.
Continue your journey across the northern slopes, trekking over gentle ridges and valleys. This peaceful stretch of trail is known for its solitude and striking volcanic scenery. Reach Third Cave Camp by early afternoon, located beneath the towering Kibo summit. Enjoy rest, hydration, and an optional acclimatization walk.
A steady ascent takes you toward the eastern base of Kibo. The air becomes thinner, and the landscape transitions into rugged alpine desert. Arrive at School Hut, your final camp before summit day. After an early dinner, rest and prepare for the midnight ascent.
Begin your summit push around midnight, trekking slowly in the cold darkness toward Gilman’s Point (5,681 m). From here, follow the crater rim to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your incredible achievement with sunrise views and photographs.
Descend to Barafu Camp for a brief rest and lunch, then continue your descent along the Mweka Route to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest zone, listening for birds and spotting monkeys along the way. Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate. Enjoy a picnic lunch before your transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration.
