The 7-day Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side near the Kenyan border, offering a peaceful, remote, and scenic ascent. Known for its gentle gradient and low foot traffic, Rongai is ideal for trekkers seeking a quieter and less crowded Kilimanjaro experience.
This extended 7-day version provides an extra acclimatization day, significantly increasing your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) successfully. The trail passes through cultivated farmlands, forests, open moorlands, and high alpine desert before reaching the wide Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Summit night is via Gilman’s Point → Stella Point → Uhuru Peak, followed by a descent along the lush Marangu Route—giving you the rare chance to traverse the mountain from north to south.
Combining wilderness, scenic diversity, and excellent acclimatization, the Rongai Route is perfect for both beginners and experienced trekkers who want a steady and rewarding climb to Africa’s highest point.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where our team will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. In the evening, enjoy a full trek briefing and gear check with your guide. Rest and hydrate for the journey ahead.
Accommodation: Moshi Hotel
Drive to the Rongai Gate, near the Kenyan border. Begin trekking through farmland and pine forests, with chances to spot colobus monkeys and diverse birdlife. As you ascend gently through heather and volcanic formations, enjoy sweeping views of Kenya to the north. Arrive at Simba Camp, perched on a scenic ridge near Mawenzi Peak.
Accommodation: Camping
Continue climbing through open moorland with views of the jagged Mawenzi Peak. The trail becomes more open and atmospheric as you approach Second Cave Camp, a major acclimatization point. Spend the afternoon resting or hiking around the area.
Hike deeper into the moorland and across rugged terrain with panoramic views of the eastern slopes. Enjoy stunning close-up vistas of Mawenzi as you approach Kikelewa Camp, set in a sheltered valley and known for its serenity and wide wilderness views.
A shorter but steep climb brings you to Mawenzi Turn, one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful camps, nestled beneath Mawenzi Peak. The alpine scenery is spectacular, and this day serves as essential acclimatization before the long approach to Kibo. Spend the afternoon resting or taking an acclimatization walk.
Cross the high-altitude Saddle, a wide, barren expanse of alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape here feels otherworldly and vast. Arrive at Kibo Hut, your base camp for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, rest and prepare gear for the midnight ascent.
Your summit attempt begins at midnight. Climb slowly up steep scree toward Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim, then continue past Stella Point to reach Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point.
Celebrate your achievement before descending to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.
Descend through moorland and lush rainforest teeming with birdlife and colobus monkeys. At Marangu Gate, sign out and receive your summit certificate. Your driver will transfer you back to Moshi for a hot shower and well-earned rest.
